Group Expectations
Respect: Maintain respectful interactions with others. Listen to and acknowledge others’ opinions and ideas before arguing the point. Discuss frustrations directly and professionally.
Collegiality: Promote and encourage others. The group’s success is your success. Provide equal amounts of positive and negative constructive feedback. Provide reasonable assistance when appropriate.
Professional Conduct: Work ethically and with integrity. Give proper credit. Build trust. Do things the right way, not the easy way. Represent the group well in professional settings. Promote others’ work. Maintain a positive professional image. Avoid scandals.
Work environment: Make UTK a good place to work. Be supportive. Make sure common areas are conducive to working.
Participation: attend group meetings, daily arxiv/standup, astro journal club, FFI journal club, HEP-Astro seminar, and colloquium. Contribute proportionally to presenting and organizing journal clubs.
Communication: respond to messages (email, slack, etc) within 1 day. Discuss delays or absences early.
Punctuality: arrive to meetings on time to maximize use of time. Complete important work on time.
Iteration: Be willing to iterate multiple times on an idea, draft, or presentation so it can anneal into a high-quality product.
In addition, if you are being paid:
Core hours: 9:30am – 2:30pm. Everybody is expected to work at least 40 hours/week, but may work more depending on your goals. 20 hours, plus research credit hours, can only be used for executing your funded research project.
Vacation: 4 weeks (20 work days) per year including the winter break. Vacation cannot interfere with deadlines and should be discussed in advance to avoid problems.
